What Is A Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer has become a popular cosmetic procedure in recent years, due to the increasing demand for natural alternatives to synthetic fillers.  With fat transfer, it’s possible to transform your appearance easily and painlessly with minimal downtime.

What Is A Fat Transfer?

A fat transfer, also known as autologous fat transfer or fat grafting, is a surgical procedure that removes fat from one region of the body, and transfers it to an area in need of volume.  The redistributed fat is therefore used as an aesthetic filler to augment areas that lack volume.

Autologous fat transfer is often referred to as ‘natural’ plastic surgery because it uses the patient’s fat instead of synthetic fillers.  Since the donor fat comes from the patient, their immune system won’t reject the transplanted fat.  The fat used for the procedure is usually taken from the abdomen, hips, or thighs.

Fat can be injected in various parts of the body to create a fuller, rejuvenated look.

Facial fat transfer has become a popular facial rejuvenation technique because it is minimally invasive, safe, and effective.  Fat can be injected into the facial tissue to recontour the face and enhance the definition.  It is commonly used to plump the cheeks and lips, and smooth out deep wrinkles and folds such as nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

When the fat is expertly distributed, facial fat transfer can provide natural-looking results.

How Fat Transfer Works

The fat needed for the graft is harvested via liposuction using a blunt cannula inserted into the donor area through a small incision.  The harvested fat then undergoes a purification process and once this is complete, the fat is injected into specific areas already marked.

What To Expect After A Fat Transfer?

There is typically some swelling and bruising at the liposuction sites, which can take anywhere from 3-6 weeks to subside.  The injection sites may also be puffy for around 1-2 weeks.

The final results of fat transfer can be seen about 3-6 months after the procedure.  The fat transfer areas will be noticeably fuller, resulting in a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance.  If you are interested in a natural alternative to synthetic implants or dermal fillers,  fat transfer may be the ideal solution for you.
